1. Archery

Archery first appeared at the 1900 Olympics in Paris. There were archery events for the next few Olympics, but then it disappeared from the Olympic program for more than 50 years. It reappeared at Munich in 1972 and has remained a fixture of the Olympics ever since. Early archery competitions varied in format.

Since 1988, there have been men’s and women’s individual and team events. The current Olympic archery competition consists of four medal events: men’s individual, women’s individual, men’s team, and women’s team. In all four events, the distance from the archer to the target is 70 meters.

2. Athletics

Athletics is a wide collection of sporting events that are comprised of different physical activities like walking, jumping, running, and throwing. There are various types of events in Athletics- Sprints, long jump, triple jump, Relay races, and throwing events are the major ones.

Each athletic event differs from one another in many ways. It is one of the most common sports played all around the world due to its lack of need for expensive equipment. Athletics generally accounts for individual player performances or team performance calculated by adding different individual performances. It is a part of the Olympics since its inception in 1896.

3. Badminton

Badminton premiered as a full-medal Olympic sport at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, and has continued as a full medal sport since then.

There are tournaments for men and women, singles and doubles. A Mixed Doubles event was added to the Olympic Games for the first time in Atlanta in 1996. The best all-time performing badminton player at the Olympic Games is female player Gao Ling of China, who played in 2000 and 2004, winning 4 gold medals.

4. Baseball

The popular world sport of baseball was a demonstration sport at the Olympics for the most part of the 20th century, and only became an official Olympic sport in 1992. This was only short-lived, the sport was dropped from the 2012 Games program, but back temporarily on the program for Tokyo 2020 (it has not been included on the 2024 sports program).

Baseball at the Olympics is only for men. There is a softball event for women. In 1992, when baseball became an official sport, Cuba won the first gold medal ever awarded. The best all-time performing Baseball player at the Olympic Games is Cuban player Pedro Luis Lazo who won 4 medals (2 of them gold) between 1996–2008.

5. Basketball

Basketball was admitted as an Olympic sport for the first time in 1936 in Berlin and has been on the program ever since. A women’s basketball tournament was added in 1976. For the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, a 3×3 basketball event for men and women was added to the program. Basketball was also a demonstration event in St Lois 1904.

In 1936, the first-ever basketball final was played on a dirt court in the rain, which made dribbling impossible. The United States team beat Canada 19 to 8. In 1972, the U.S. basketball team lost a game for the first time, defeated by the Soviet Union. However, the US team refused to accept the silver medal, claiming that the clock had been improperly restarted in the final moments. In 1988, the last American basketball team playing without NBA players won the bronze medal.

6. Boxing

Boxing has been held at every Summer Olympic Games since it first appeared in 1904, except for in 1912 in Stockholm as Swedish law banned the sport at the time. In 2009, the IOC voted to include women’s boxing at the 2012 London Games, so now there are men and women competing in all Olympic sports.

The male boxing bouts are contested over three 3-minute rounds, female bouts are four 2-minute rounds. Tokyo 2021 will see the women’s elite boxing tournament extended from three to five weight.

7. Cycling

Cycling is a core Olympic sport and one of five sports that has been contested at every Summer Olympic Games since 1896. The other core sports are Athletics, Fencing, Gymnastics and Swimming. Cycling has been part of the Olympic Games since the beginning of the modern era.

There are currently four disciplines in Olympic cycling: track cycling, road cycling, mountain-bike and BMX. BMX was the latest to be added to the Olympic program, in 2008.

8. Table Tennis

Table Tennis or Ping-pong is an indoor sport which is played between 2 players (or pairs in case of doubles) in which a lightweight ball is moved across the table with small bats. As an international sport, Table Tennis has been governed by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) since 1926.

Table Tennis is an Olympic sport since 1988. The official Table Tennis Rules are specified in the ITTF handbook which is revised annually and changes (if any) are generally implemented from 1st January.

9. Volleyball

Volleyball is a team game played with a ball and a net. There are teams on either side of the net. One team hits the ball over the net line and into the other team’s court or area, the other team must then hit the ball back over the net and in bounds within three tries without letting the ball contact the floor.

There are 2 main types of competitive volleyball that are played all over the world. They are indoor and beach volleyball. Both are sports that are a part of the Olympic games and have competitive leagues.

10. Wrestling

Wrestling is a physical combat sport played on an octagonal mat with a circle inside it. The sport has elements of sambo, judo, traditional wrestling and other such combat sports. The 2 types of wrestling held in the Olympics are Greco-Roman Wrestling and Freestyle Wrestling. We will be discussing Freestyle wrestling rules in this article.

Athletes can grab opponents below the waist and use their legs in both attack and defence in Freestyle Wrestling. It is contested at a wide variety of different weight levels: light flyweight, flyweight, bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight, welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, heavyweight and super heavyweight. Also, both men and women compete in Freestyle Wrestling at the Olympics, unlike Greco-Roman Wrestling.
